How the unfit are drawn to follow the fit.

Hurling Final Croke Park Dublin2013.Sept. 8th.
Cork versus Clare. 1.

Oh! How the unfit are drawn to follow the fit;
The puny, the weak, the fat, the inept, the frail,
All will be saved or lost in the flick of a hurler’s wrist.
.
2.
They ape the same get-up of their slim heroes’ strip,
Spare tyres in shirts, their one solo feat of non-restraint.
Oh! How the unfit are drawn to follow the fit.

3.
Along all routes they parade with banners and clenched fists,
Free at last to shout, roar and rebelliously wale.
All will be saved or lost in the flick of a hurler’s wrist.
4.
They campaign for their team with pints and spirits,
They agitate their courage with cans of pale ale,
Oh! How the unfit are drawn to follow the fit.

5.
In lofty stadium they will rise up, revolt and resist
When hurlers clash, rattle, so gladiatorial, so male.
All will be saved or lost in the flick of a hurler’s wrist.
6.
They will file away to smile or cry, to be sick to the pit,
Confirmed in destinies to forever win or to forever fail.
Oh! Why are the unfit drawn to follow the fit?
Why all is lost or won with the flick of a hurler’s wrist!

  1. Bobby, you have captured the fury of the sports fans succinctly. It always amazes me how people, who are normally quiet and calm (including myself), can get so riled up over sports. I think harmless and healthy behavior in cheering on one’s team is good.
